Reviewing Ruth's progress

Ruth is able to attend her check up at the specialist, and return home.

Once they are back at Ruth's place, Aisha sits down with Ruth to review how the trip went. Aisha thinks the public transport experience went well as a first practice, but it is important to talk it through with Ruth.

Reviewing Ruth's progress

Aisha asks Ruth: "How would you feel about doing the trip again?"

This is a common first question that Aisha asks her learners. She deliberately asks such an open question in order to encourage her learner to assess how it went and whether they would like or need more training.

Aisha tries to avoid questions like: "Do you think you could do the trip alone next time?" This is a loaded question, and might suggest to Ruth that she should be able to complete the trip alone. Ruth should be given her own chance to review the practice session.

Ruth tells Aisha: "I got a great confidence boost from that. I was worried about missing the train when transferring from the bus to the train, but getting to the station didn't take long, like we planned, and the train came when I expected it. I feel like I could do it again, sure." Ruth doesn't indicate whether she would like to do it alone, though.

Reviewing Ruth's progress

Aisha also prompts Ruth with a few "quiz" questions. For example, Aisha asks: "So, what would you have done if we did miss the train at Lithgow?" Ruth isn't sure.

This is another important part of reviewing public transport practice – Aisha needs to get a good understanding of Ruth's capabilities, so Aisha can assess the level of any further training.

Aisha and Ruth talk through alternative trains to catch, and contacting the specialist to rearrange her appointment.

Aisha and Ruth agree that Aisha should come along for another practice session on the weekend, so that Ruth can practise making the trip when there is trackwork.
